Cisco Network Simulators Available For Immediate Download

Computer networking students are caught in between a rock and a hard place when going through difficult course studies. Students need access to hardware available in class to do labs and reports, and may not have the same hardware at home to work on. Emulation programs have sought to fix this problem.

Boson produces its purchase-only option with Netsim. Netsim has three different licenses as of current, which range from $199 to $499. Boson is the best option for instructors, since it comes packed with grading abilities and lab work. Students are likely not able to afford the price tag, so if they don’t get to use it through their course, you probably won’t see too many students using Netsim.

Dynagen is another program, only it’s absolutely free. Dynagen is an open source program that is built on the Dynamips emulator, available free to download at any time. Dynagen is criticized for its lack of an intuitive interface, yet also hailed as a very functional program once it’s learned. For the seemingly learning impaired, there are better options out there.

Dynamips also has GNS-3 to work with. Between Dynagen and GNS-3, GNS-3 is used more frequently among students. Students that are just beginning will be turned away from the difficult use of Dynagen. Luckily, GNS-3 has a forum, video documentation of using the program, and plenty of helping supporters. Students that are self-learning and not in a Cisco class will find this computer network simulator to be one of the finest of the bunch.

Self-learners are a breed of students that don’t need classes to obtain their certifications. Although they may be saving money on course costs, they won’t be able to use the best network simulator to date: Packet Tracer. This program is produced by Cisco, who took the time to make the interface amazingly simple to use for such a powerful program. Packet Tracer isn’t available for download to the public, yet if you are alumni or a current student you can access the download area.

There are several web-based programs used with Macromedia Flash and text-based applications that one can look at. These range from free to pricey, just as standalone programs do. Web-based applications can be just as useful, but keep in mind you’ll have to have a constant connection to the Internet to use most of them. Often times it’s just better to get a desktop application for ease of use.

Final Thoughts

Network simulation is advanced technology. Thus, there aren’t too many choices to dwell on while you are looking for a study aid. Check those mentioned and perhaps do some searching of your own to see if updates or new programs are on the horizon.
