How To Install A Pellet Stove With Safety In Mind
Posted by Marketing Tactics - 24/11/09 at 10:11:25 pmLike a small child who wants to build a model car, adults who have purchased a new “toy” want to assemble it as fast as possible and get it running. It’s important to not rush the process for pellet stoves, as not installing the stove properly can result in immediate danger. There are some safety tips to remember during the process.
Never crowd the area around a pellet stove- it must always have room as specified in the operating manual. A pellet stove and its location should be planned out long before the purchase of the stove. If the stove does become crowded, it starts to become a fire hazard that is really just a time bomb waiting to cause a catastrophe. In general it’s also good to go beyond the minimum specifications for added safety.
Combustion is needed for the fire to start and to be maintained. Some source of air is necessary for the pellet stove to operate. While not always necessary, sometimes a home owner might have to install a special combustion tube that draws air from the outside. The manual should be more precise, as this can vary on the model.
Ideally, the stove should be vented vertically so that burn hazards don’t become a problem. Check to make sure that the location you wish to install it at will allow you to vertically install a venting mechanism. The mechanism doesn’t have to be too large- just enough to let the smoke escape out of the pellet stove. As a last resort you can try a horizontal vent.
Sometimes fire can escape the boundaries of the stove through different means. An example would be with the classic wood stove, which often has a “crackling” fire that spews hot wood and fire through the opening ever now and then. If the material the stove is resting on is flammable, this could obviously lead to a very big problem.
Electricity is used with a wood pellet stove to feed the fire more pellets every now and then. It’s the most convenient way to keep a fire going all night without having to tend to it at all hours of the night. Do remember, however, that electricity can be dangerous as well, and you will need to follow wattage ratings and use a surge protector to keep your stove from overloading. It’s just like having any other electronics device- just treat it with care.
Final Thoughts
It can take several hours in total to get a pellet stove up and working for someone who has never done it before- and that’s without accounting for mistakes. It’s better to outsource the installation process by asking a professional to do it for you. It may cost money, but the job gets done right the first time.
