When such a large percentage of the population has a tattoo of some sort, finding your own way in the masses of tattoos will prove difficult, but inspiration is not far.
It sounds almost silly to jump-start your creativity by looking at the work of other artists. However, the only way you will be able to escape the current mind set and boundaries you currently hold is to see truly impressive works of art. That doesn’t mean that you have to steal ideas or inspiration from other tattoos, but rather develop an appreciation for creativity. In time you will see that it greatly helps with your own ideas.

Even finding a simple art showcase website can help you get ideas, even if the original art wasn’t intended to be used in a tattoo design.
Be sure to read up on symbolism and how it is used in literary works. Symbolism is a major theme in tattoo design. Different animals, objects, and relics can give even the simplest of tattoos a double-edged meaning. It wouldn’t hurt to find a book from a local store that explains the meaning behind common and not so common tattoos.
If you’re an artist yourself, the best bet would be to create your own drawing and ask a local tattoo artist to recreate it. Even if you aren’t much of an artist, simple tattoos won’t take much to learn in creating. You gain the benefit of being able to tell onlookers that your tattoo is unique because you created the original draft of the design. For some there is nothing more fulfilling that being able to say that.
Inspiration comes most often from the point in which you decided you thought it would be a good idea to get a tattoo. Knowing that you want a tattoo usually means you have some sort of underlying meaning you want fulfilled. You could have seen a tattoo design you thought was interesting and wanted something similar for yourself. Stay in tune with your feelings and inspirations to arrive at a logical decision.
