Growing Plants Indoor Via LED Lighting Methods
Posted by Marketing Tactics - 31/07/09 at 11:07:28 pmThere are so many reasons to rejoice in using LED lighting for your indoor plants. Indoor gardening hobbyists who aren’t already making use of LED lighting will be surprised to learn that their current tactics of lighting their indoor plants are probably horribly outdated.
The purpose of the light-emitting diode is to give the plants the light necessary for photosynthesis. Not all LED lights are suited for all plants, however. Different light colors will emit different wavelengths. You can fine-tune the way you grow your plants by using different lighting for different stages in the plant’s life- from seed to a mature plant.
The lighting that an LED provides is so energy efficient because there is little heat that is given off. That is a mixed blessing. While you save money on energy costs, you will also have to spend extra money to heat the room if the temperature is too low. This is important during Winter, when temperatures can get dangerously low. A heating unit will have to be installed.
You may also notice that your plants do not need as much water. This is because there is less heat from the LED lighting, and the water does not evaporate to the extent that it normally would. Pay very special attention to the amount of water your plants take in, and modify your watering schedule to ensure you are not over-watering your plants. Otherwise you could seriously damage your plants, or even critically injure them.
Humans need oxygen to survive- and so too do plants! Oxygen is necessary for cell respiration and can’t be forgotten as a vital element in a plant’s growth. When you are using an LED lighting system, the LED will output a certain level of CO2 that can eventually strangle out all the oxygen in the atmosphere and instead damage your plant. Usually this is only a problem for very large operations in rooms with poor ventilation- but having a meter handy is never a bad idea to be safe.
The light level of an LED is considerably less than what you and I are probably accustomed to. While it would make for bad eye sight, plants are just fine in a lower light level. Plants only need a specific aspect of the light, and can do fine in low-brightness environments. Even still, you may wish to install secondary lighting so that you can see better if your current LED equipment doesn’t leave you satisfied.
Final Thoughts
LED lighting is highly recommended for indoor lighting purposes in regards to hydroponics. You will of course want to learn more about the subject before putting into practice. Ask for an informational booklet to read up more on the lighting source with your purchase at your gardening center.
